About Us

The Scottish Centre for Children with Motor Impairments, based at the Craighalbert Centre, is one of Scotland's Grant Aided Special Schools receiving funding from the Scottish Government’s Additional Support Needs Division.

The Centre provides day school education for school age and nursery children affected by motor impairments resulting from brain damage. The Centre also provides inreach services which enable motor impaired children who attend their local schools across all parts of Scotland to access the Centre’s services.

Cerebral palsy is an umbrella term used to describe a wide range of difficulties with balance, posture, movement, co-ordination and speech which result from brain damage and which frequently occurs before or during birth, or in the first two years of a child's life, when the brain is developing.

The Centre has the aim of enabling children to achieve their full potential, developing independence and life skills.  To enable children to achieve their full potential, the Centre has the remit to use Conductive Education and other progressive methods, which   are considered to be most effective when there is a strong family engagement.  The Centre is therefore family-focused and works closely with parents, siblings and other relatives.

In addition to the services described above, the Centre is developing outreach services which will involve the establishment of partnerships throughout Scotland thus enabling children in all parts of the country to access the Centre’s services close to their home.
