Craighalbert winter newsletter 2006

Gillian HoomanGillian Hooman
On 23 December little Gillian Hooman who was just five, from the Nursery Group died very suddenly at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow.  Everyone at Craighalbert sends their sympathy to Gillian’s Mum, Karen, Dad, David, her twin sister Gemma and older sister Laura.  Gillian is sadly missed in the Nursery.  My lasting memory of Gillian is sitting in the classroom on her box, holding onto a little ladderback, shouting at me because I had come into the classroom and not spoken to her.  In 2004 Radio Clyde and Clyde Action asked if some of the children from the Centre could help switch on the Christmas lights in Buchanan Galleries.  Three children from the Centre went along — Gillian, who at that time was in the Parent and Child Group, Ewan from the Nursery and Ryan from the School Group.  However, it was Gillian’s job to actually switch on the lights.  She really enjoyed this job and all children were given some lovely gifts after the switching on ceremony.

Christmas Cards
Last January I went to the launch of the Ling Design Christmas Card Collection for 2006.  I won first prize in the draw, which was 500 packs of our choice of Christmas Cards for the Centre.  The Ling rep Karen Dawes visited the Centre and the children in the Nursery chose the card (left).  The first order contained 535 pack of the cards, which were sold at £3/pack.  I ordered a further 262 packs, which sold within weeks and a further 262 packs were ordered.  They arrived in mid-November in time for the Cumbernauld Cultural Forum’s Art and Craft Fayre and their Variety Show on 22 and 24 November. In total £1375 has been raised via the Christmas cards.  I am very grateful to the parents, staff, families, friends and supporters who bought the cards

Art Exhibition in Princes Square GlasgowArt Exhibition in Princes Square
The management at Princes Square very kindly agreed to the Centre exhibiting the children’s artwork for five days from Monday 02 to Friday 06 October.  We had many pieces of artwork covering the courtyard in the lower ground floor of Princes Square.  All sold apart from two pieces and between the sale of paintings and the donations in the collecting cans a total of just over £500 was raised.  The object of the exercise was awareness raising rather than fundraising.  The Lord Provost of Glasgow, the Rt Hon Elizabeth Cameron opened the exhibition on the Monday and I am very grateful to her for coming along.  After opening the exhibition the Lord Provost invited some of the children to visit the City Chambers and have lunch at a future date.  Thanks also go to Asia and Tracy of the Princes Square Management Team for all their help and to David Fraser and his staff at Fantoosh for their help.  Thanks to the Evening Times, who covered the opening.

Centre Transport
Over the last few months we have had three very generous donations from Trusts towards new Centre Group cheque for centre transporttransport totalling £110,000.  The first donation of £42,500 was reported in the Autumn Newsletter.  Children’s Aid (Scotland) Ltd donated £42,500 to purchase a sixteen seater mini bus.  Monte Marco, Chairman of the Committee, Treasurer Bryan Jackson and Committee member, David Jaffe, visited at the end of July to present the children with a cheque.  On 26 October Monte was back at the Centre, this time with Tom Cromar to present the mini bus to Centre Patron Muriel Gray and some of the children from the Nursery and School Groups.  The R S Macdonald Charitable Trust donated £25,000 towards a new vehicle and Radio Clyde Cash for Kids made a £42,500 donation in October for a further mini bus.  This time we plan to buy a twelve seater mini bus and use the remainder of the donation towards a people carrier.  We have identified a people carrier with rotating seats, which will greatly help us to get children into the carrier.

On Thursday 09 November I attended the Children’s Aid (Scotland) fundraising dinner in Glasgow.  During the evening I told those attending what the donations, totalling £84,000, had meant to the Craighalbert Centre and to thank everyone for their support.  A short video shot at the Centre was also shown.  I had a wonderful night sitting next to ex Rangers Skipper Richard Gough, had a chat with Ally McCoist, Andy Goram, Pat Nevin, Trevor Steven and Fraser Wishart.  The evening was hosted by Andy Cameron and the speaker was Roger de Courcey with Nookie Bear, who was hilarious.  Thanks go to Monte and the Committee for inviting me along and to Monte’s, son-in-law, Russell, for his hospitality
